Voted up!! yes this is all true and such an important position. I love that video- funny!!!
I will become a stay at home mom in a few weeks. Although I look forward to it I know it's going to be tough. Thanks for shining a light on the hard work stay at home moms do.
The thing about being a stay at home mom is it has a shelf life. It's not a position that is available forever. When it's over, it's over. I did it for 13 years and thank God I didn't waste the opportunity. No, I will never be the publisher of the Atlanta Journal. But I did eventually have a career in newspapers and it was an acceptable consolation prize for the children growing up. Enjoy every wonderful/frustrating moment. They go by fast - really.
Girl... I resigned from my career as an engineer of 20 years to be a stay at home mom a couple of months ago. Everything you say is accurate. It never ends. I have had many stressful jobs but none as stressful as this. I am rethinking my decision and have started applying for jobs. I know that sounds terrible but I think everyone was happier with our schedule and home when I was working. Because I was happier. I am just not cut out to stay at home with 4 kids. Ahhhhh..
Angela P: Only you know what is best for your family. There is more than one way to do this right.
Also, any stay at home mom should know the facts of life: my daughter's husband left her with two toddlers and at their divorce hearing the judge admonished my daughter for being foolish enough to put herself in the position of having no career to support herself. Being a stay at home mom had no legal protection whatsoever. She now works fulltime and shares custody with her ex even though he walked out on her. Beware.
Great hub! Voting up! I agree it does get frustrating at times but is so worth it. Made me laugh and gave comfort that I'm not alone!
I found the testimonial very interesting I have been a stay at home mom now for about 8 years and what was shared is so true. There are times when you do get bored, feel lonley, and need to find things to refresh you as a person. It is not easy and it takes a lot of work. This article is a great depiction of all the joys, and challenges of being a stay at home mom.
I was a stay at home Mom. It is the most rewarding job in the world and the hardest. I got a big laugh out of the job descriptions...they are very true!Even though my two Daughters have left the nest,I have become a stay at home wife and hope that my girls will call,so I can put on my "Mom hat" and make it all better again!!!
Excellent hub, Alissa!
Unfortunately my job is compromised by the head chef here who shoos me out of the kitchen every time I walk in...except the times he threatens to chain me neked to the stove and just take photos ;)
Voted up!
Alissa: Thanks for following me. Hope you enjoy my Hubs too!
voting up....funny this is soo cool...look i need to think about a salary...who is with me? gret hub
I was a SAHM for 12 years then I got my promotion to WAHM just last year!
I was a SAHM by accident. I planned on working outside the home but when I looked into how much child care was, my husband and I thought it would actually save us money by me staying home instead. I loved being a SAHM! I believe it is the best job in the world! I am fortunate.
12 years went by and a few part time jobs. I am now starting to eeek a living from my blog and article writing. My biggest paychecks are still in hugs and kisses from my son, 13, and daughter, 11 but those don't pay the car bill, lol.
Very cute...I love the juggling photo. You have probably heard it before but the kids grow soooo fast! Remember to take all in once in a while:)
I'm not a mom and never will be in this lifetime but I so enjoyed your article and the video that you added. Thank you for sharing your challenges. I have a close friend with two children and I feel like she is sweet super mom but I now see she is quite a tough cookie and down right brilliant as are all good moms. Smile!
Nice article :)
I am also a stay at home mom to two kids. At the same time I work from home as a freelance writer.
Although it is quite difficult at times to manage both, it is satisfying that you are with your kids when they need you.
Nice hub :)
Thanks
Great hub! Hilarious but so true! I was a sahm then a working mom and I'm now a wahm. It's hard but I enjoy it and I love that I actually get to see my kids grow up and not just hear and see snippets of it. It would be great though if there were a salary for being a sahm! But then I guess it wouldn't be the same! No one knows sacrifice like a mother does.
Loved this! Funny and true!
It's funny to see the "job description" in writing! After over ten years on the job so far, I don't regret taking the position. Great hub. Voted up!
so true! As a sahm this made me lol
I was a stay at home mom for a few years. It was hard work with no pay but it was very rewarding. I love the article and video. Up and awesome.
Great Hub! I'm a stay at home mom of 3 boys and I can related to much of what you said!!!
Love it! Congrats on the nomination. Great job capturing the many hats a stay at home mom wears.
Great approach to a vital job position! Your wit has encapsulated the vast skill set required to be a true stay at home mom!

Your job description is right on! I have been a SAHM for 11 years and found that the job can even be extended to include Teacher to the homeschooled kids, and Advocate for kids in public school!
Great Hub!

Being a stay at home is hard work! I know I stayed at home for one month and couldn't wait to get back in the office!
Why would anyone apply man or woman ?
Congrats on the nomination! Will be voting!
Nice one! Beautifully put together.
It's tough to be a stay at home Mum, but surely the most rewarded job of all (in the end!)
Great job description. I wonder how many men will apply? I am a SAHM during the summer since I am a teacher. There are times that I wish I were back in the classroom but overall it is a wonderfully stressful and fantastically rewarding job. I would love to be able to do that full time. Congrats on your nomination and welcome to Hubpages!
Really cute focus for this one. You make a ton of good points. I am voting it up.
Great job Alissa! I did it for awhile and then went back to work. We have just decided I am going back to being a stay at home mom. I am so glad. It is one of the hardest jobs in the world but definitely the most rewarding! They are growing up so fast and I don't want to miss a thing :) Keep up the good work!
Great hub alissa! Well done and informative. Congratulations on your Hub Nugget Win!
I love the job description - it's so true. I stayed home with my kids for many years. I loved it and would do it all over again. I felt very fortunate and blessed to be able to stay home with them although there were some financial sacrifices. Congrats on your win.
Dear Alissa,
Enjoyed reading your hub, and listening to the video as I read some of the comments.
Can relate to the problem of how much child care costs. I was a SAHM because I wanted to give my daughter the best, and she wasn't getting the best when she was in child care when I worked. Things improved when she was in preschool and Kindergarten, but my husband and I have always wanted to home-school her. We began doing so loosely when she was younger, but are doing it more deliberately now. Since her birthday misses the DOE cutoff of August 31st, I actively home-schooled her from 5-6 years and she started reading during that time. :0)
Now, I must increase my efforts to earn money at home around home-schooling her,...and am enjoying it thoroughly. Have an M.Ed. in elementary education and I feel that I am using it by home-schooling my daughter...even moreso than if I were teaching in a classroom. I am also lucky that the things I enjoy are things I can share with her...things we can do together...so I am never bored...no time to be bored! :0)...but then again I have but 1 child, and that is as much as I can handle. I extend my admiration to those who can juggle life as a SAHM with more than 1 child.
Great article. I took a break from my job to take care of my baby for 2 years. During these 2 years, I too felt that engineering work was much easier than taking care of a small baby. I do enjoy spending time with little one and at the same time I look forward to go back to work once she starts kindergarten.
I thought I knew what a SAHM did as my Mom was one. I started out working outside the home when DH and I got married. We then became a foster home, then a legal risk foster home. We adopted our oldest son and had another foster child in our home and still I worked outside the home. Then we had two little girls placed with us and I tried to work but quickly came to realize my entire paycheck was going to child care. So I them became a SAHM.
We had at that point 4 children under the age of 3 (all 7 months apart from oldest to youngest). I had to put on my Refere hat and never took it off until the children went to bed.
When the two girls left our home I was able to take off that hat but then I had to put on my educator hat and theach the boys how to do things like talk, color, FS to crawl as he wanted to walk at 6 months.
Then we had a teenage girl placed with us and I had to add a counselor hat and a medical hat in the mix. I had to keep track of all her medication, along with the boys medication, all doctors appointments and counseling appointments.
I also had to put on a defensive suite to ward off all the physical blows aimed my direction.
So Your Home, Inc. has really gotten their money's worth out of me. I've been worked so hard that I am now broken in body but not in spirit or mind.
I still use the refere and counselor hats as well as the secretary hat for appointments. DH handles the rest as he is currently a SAHD.
What an amazing and creative hub. Exactly how I feel. So glad I read this.
This is an excellent hub, alissa. This reminds me so much of my mom who took very good care of me and my siblings while making sure all other duties in the house are in check. Voted up and sharing this!
